Our school on air tonight

December 20, 2013

In November, the journalist and radio host Selina Müller travelled around Kenya and also paid two visits to our slum school, the „Precious Vision Care Centre“ in Mombasa. Tonight from 9pm to 10pm CET she talks about her journey on the radio show „Sirup“. Apart from giving her impressions on topics ranging from politics and education to public health, you will also hear a lot of music from Kenya. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear an eyewitness account on conditions in the Shauri Yako slum and the educational work at our school.

In Zurich, you can listen to the program on air on 97.5 MHz and on cable on 88.1 MHz. In the rest of Switzerland and abroad you can follow the show online on the webcast of www.lora.ch.

During the 55th UN General Assembly in 2010, head of states or governments agreed on eight Millennium Development Goals, which should guide the international community in its efforts to reducing poverty in the world by half until 2015. The simple goal 2 stated: achieve universal primary education! The aim was to ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

But where do we stand today on delivering on this goal?

In his report, published in July 2013, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon evaluates the current state of achieving the Millennium Development Goals. He writes:

„We risk failing to keep our promise to enable all children to go to school. The number of children out of primary school declined from 102 million to 57 million between 2000 and 2011. But progress has slowed significantly over the past five years. Without renewed efforts, the target of universal primary education by 2015 seems beyond reach, particularly in conflict-affected countries. Half the world’s out-of-school children live in sub-Saharan Africa, with the gap largest for children and adolescents from the poorest households. Much stronger efforts are needed to improve the quality of education and provide lifelong learning opportunities, especially for girls and women, those belonging to ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities and children living in conflict-affected areas, rural areas or urban slums.”

Small steps can lead to big changes! We would like to thank all out donors for their generous contributions. With your donations to our school in the slum of Shauri Yako in Mombasa, Kenya, you are making a small but important contribution towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and therefore reducing poverty in the world. Thank you very much!
